Award: 2010 Engineering Excellence Award
Presented by: American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Tennessee
Leading the competition’s Water and Wastewater category, SSR project highlights from the $40 million facility upgrade, include:
- Installation of a new membrane filtration system—now able to process 20 million gallons of water per day, Stones River is the largest membrane filtration system in Tennessee
- Replacement of facility chemical storage and dosing system
- A full transition of the facility’s disinfection system from the hazardous chemical gaseous chlorine to the much safer alternative onsite sodium hypochlorite generation
- Installation of a granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration system, helping to reduce pharmaceutical and total organic compounds in the finished water supply
- Commissioning of standby power generation for the facility
Built in 1966, the Stones River Water Treatment Plant had not previously undergone a facility expansion since 1981.
