St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Texas Heart Institute Denton A. Cooley Building
Award: Building Team of the Year Award, 2003 and Grand Award for Institutional Category
Presented by: Building Design & Construction

St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, home of the Texas Heart® Institute, has been providing compassionate health care from its location in the heart of the Texas Medical Center for almost five decades. Founded in 1954 by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, today St. Luke's delivers primary and tertiary health care to patients from the Houston metropolitan area and around the world. St. Luke’s made headlines with such milestones as the first successful heart transplantation, the first artificial heart implantation, and the first laser angioplasty procedure.
Since 1998, SSR has been providing engineering design services to St. Luke’s Episcopal Healthcare System. A project we are proud to have provided services on is the Denton A. Cooley Building for the Texas Heart Institute @ SLEH, which opened for the first time in 2002. The ten-story, 327,000 square-feet building adjacent to St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, contains the full spectrum of cardiovascular services. The building includes 12 cardiac operating rooms, 3 floors of critical care patient beds, research labs, education, telemedicine center, and a 500-seat auditorium facility.
