Pigeon Forge Water Treatment Plant
Award: Achievement Award for Excellence in Public Works, 2003

Presented by: Tennessee Municipal League

According to the 2000 census, Pigeon Forge’s population is about 5,000, but it can swell to 60,000 overnight when tourists are in town. The city’s previous water plant could only handle four million gallons per day. SSR designed a new water treatment plant to accommodate such unusual water demands and to readily allow for adaptations to meet future changes in drinking water regulations.

The new plant began operations in May 2002. In addition to increased capacity levels, the new facility improves the architectural appearance of the plant exterior to blend nicely with the nearby community center and library complex; is designed for optimum efficiency and minimum energy consumption; improves the water quality; allows the city to consistently meet current water regulations; provides for on-going operational cost savings and was completed sooner than anticipated and under budget.
