NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) has presented its Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award to John Jernigan, PE, RLS, senior consultant for SSR Ellers, the Memphis office of SSR.
The state organization bestows the Outstanding Engineer Award to a professional who demonstrates outstanding service and support to the society and to their profession. It is the highest honor given by the TSPE. It is the second straight year Jernigan has been recognized by TSPE. In 2006 he was named the Outstanding Engineer of the Year for the organizations Memphis Chapter.
“I am truly honored to be named the 2007 Outstanding Engineer of the Year,” said Jernigan. “Tennessee is home to some of the best engineers in the world and to be singled out from this group is both humbling and rewarding.”
Jernigan has been with SSR Ellers since 1965 and helped start the office’s transportation division. He is a civil/structural engineer and licensed surveyor, providing management and design services for many local and national civil/transportation projects in both the public and private sectors.
His work in Tennessee includes a variety of facilities and support systems for industrial, commercial and institutional clients such as Federal Express Corporation, Tennessee Department of Transportation, Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, City of Memphis, Shelby County Government, Southern Division of Naval Facilities Engineering Command and most recently, the Tennessee Air National Guard.
Jernigan earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS. He received his master’s degree in civil/transportation engineering and a doctorate in seismic risk evaluation from the University of Memphis. He is a registered professional engineer in 16 states and land surveyor in 4 states.
