Cook Children’s Medical Center, Fort Worth, Texas
$250,000,000 | May 2011
To respond to an increasing need for more neonatal services, Cook Children’s Medical Center is undergoing a 278,000 sq. ft. hospital expansion, adding a 270,000 sq. ft. medical office building as well as parking garage levels as part of a 250 million dollar multi-phase project. In addition to its neonatal expansion, the new space will house general patient care and dining facilities to service the entire hospital.

Based on feedback from a parent focus group, the new neonatal units will feature private rooms, some that can house up to three beds, taking into account the need for siblings and families to stay together. The new design differs from the traditional open-bed design found in Cook’s existing neonatal unit in that it better facilitates privacy, comfort and personal consideration for parents dealing with the stress of having a child in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Throughout the construction process, various measures have been taken to help mitigate noise levels and vibrations that could be harmful to premature babies. By utilizing advanced sound monitors, construction and hospital staff can monitor these noise levels and vibrations so that construction procedures can be planned accordingly.

The SSR Dallas team is producing construction documents in Revit, and sharing 3D model information with sub-contractors as part of fast-track integrated project delivery.
