Healthcare is an industry in transition, some would say chaos; it’s changing daily and I find all the intricacies fascinating. I enjoy engaging with the healthcare industry. The people are committed and passionate about what they do, and they have a sense of “mission” about their work.

Clay Seckman, PE

Healthcare Market Leader

Clay began his career with SSR in 1979 as a mechanical engineer. In 1984, he moved to Houston to be part of the firm’s first branch office. Beginning in 1986, Clay oversaw the Houston office for twelve years before moving back to Nashville. Today, he serves as the Healthcare Market Leader.

Clay graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1979 and is a registered professional engineer in seven states. Clay serves on several healthcare industry committees with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). He recently shared his knowledge by co-authoring ASHE’s Health Facility Commissioning Guidelines and the subsequent Handbook. He is a frequent speaker at healthcare industry events and is noted for his knowledge of Integrated Project Delivery.

If Clay had not pursued the engineering field, he probably would have become a pilot in the Tennessee Air National Guard. When you ask Clay why he has continued his father’s legacy of engineering at Smith Seckman Reid, he offers a simple response; “I enjoy seeing people be successful, seeing projects completed, and solving challenges.” His attitude is evident from the number of long lasting relationships he has built throughout the industry.  For fun, Clay is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys duck hunting.  He and his wife have three grown children.
