St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital

Murfreesboro, Tennessee

St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital is a new 555,000 SF healthcare facility with a capacity of 286 beds. The project was constructed on a 68-acre green field site green field. It replaced an existing facility that was originally constructed in 1926.

The facility includes an emergency department with 49 exam rooms, 10 ORs (with two shell spaces), PACU, day surgery, radiology, three cath labs, and 121 med/surg rooms (36 pediatric). The hospital also houses 32 ICU rooms, 11 LDR rooms, three c-section rooms, 15 NICU rooms, 20 well-baby rooms, post-partum, and continuing care nurseries. The facility is equipped with a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment modifications that included digital radiography, nuclear medicine suites with dual detectors, ultrasound, a CT scanner, cardiac cath labs, and MRI capabilities.

This project utilized the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method, with SSR performing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and commissioning services. The project team made full use of design assist construction relationships, 3-D construction modeling to facilitate clash detection, and prefabrication of major MEP system components. The IPD approach enhanced project team/contractor relationships, helped maintain scope definition, and significantly reduced field coordination issues.

There are three unique engineering features on the project. Automatic Joint Commission reporting was included in the emergency power system, with extensive power monitoring of distribution system as well as battery free flywheel UPS systems for telecom data and selected radiology equipment. Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) scenarios were run at the beginning of the project to select the optimum building orientation, HVAC systems, and exterior enclosure designs. The facility also employed an extensive use of LED lighting to reduce operational costs. In addition, the project included a full central energy plant.

The project was awarded the Pyramid Award in the Mega Projects category of “Associated Builders and Contractors’ National Excellence in Construction Awards.”
