Energy Codes are Quickly Evolving – Are You Ready?

3 minute read

Energy codes are quickly evolving across the country, both at the state and local levels.  While energy codes represent the least efficient building you can legally build, they are getting increasingly more complicated and stringent. Furthermore, adoption is literally all over the map! This presents the opportunity to create more energy efficient buildings which save operational costs and reduce carbon emissions.

If you don’t have dedicated team members to keep up with and research the impacts of these new trends, it can be hard to stay on track. SSR has experience working with teams from concept phase and throughout the project design to educate, evaluate, and discuss the more stringent requirements with design teams to find the best path for each project.

The newest versions of ASHRAE 90.1 as well as the 2021 and 2024 versions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) come with some significant impacts to design. SSR’s dedicated team can walk you through the differences in the mandatory and prescriptive requirements between the IECC and ASHRAE Standard 90.1 compliance pathways. We can go through all the benefits of using an energy model throughout the design process, including energy code compliance.

In two upcoming posts, we’ll provide an overview of significant changes in the codes as well as using an energy model to comply with your local energy code.
