SSR Mourns the Passing of Founder Lester Smith

SSR is deeply saddened by the passing of one of our founders, Lester Smith, whose vision, leadership, and dedication to people helped shape the firm into what it is today.

As one of our four founders, Lester established principles that continue to guide the company decades later. His commitment to technical excellence, integrity, and service created a culture that has endured and evolved while remaining true to its roots.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lester was a teacher at heart. He never missed an opportunity to share knowledge, offer guidance, or help someone develop their potential. Whether mentoring young engineers, advising colleagues, or sharing lessons learned through experience, he believed deeply in investing in others. He was also a passionate advocate for employee ownership and the opportunities it creates for individuals, believing that ownership fosters accountability, engagement, and long-term investment in the firm’s success. His commitment to developing future leaders and expanding ownership opportunities remains reflected in SSR’s culture today.

“Lester’s vision and leadership helped build the foundation of SSR, but his greatest contribution was the people he influenced along the way,” said SSR CEO Susan Osterberg. “He believed knowledge was meant to be shared, and he was passionate about helping others grow and succeed. He was also a strong advocate for ownership, recognizing the opportunities it creates for individuals to build meaningful careers while contributing to something larger than themselves. The values he championed, investing in people, sharing knowledge, and fostering ownership continue to shape SSR and are reflected every day in the way we serve our clients and support one another.”

Lester was also known for the genuine relationships he built throughout his life and career. He cared deeply about people, taking a sincere interest in their families, careers, and personal journeys. Those who knew him often speak of his ability to make every interaction meaningful and his willingness to offer encouragement, wisdom, and friendship.

For Osterberg, Lester’s influence extended beyond his role as a founder.

Although I never had the opportunity to formally work with Lester, I was fortunate to get to know him and Kathryn over the years,” Osterberg said. “I loved listening to Lester reflect on the beginnings of SSR and the journey that brought the firm to where it is today. He remained deeply interested in the company’s growth and always wanted to hear about our people, our projects, and our progress. He was incredibly proud of what SSR had become and never missed an opportunity to offer words of encouragement. His belief in this company and its people was evident in every conversation.”

Lester’s legacy lives on through the culture he helped create, the countless professionals he mentored, and the relationships he built throughout his lifetime. While SSR mourns his passing, the firm also celebrates a life defined by leadership, service, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to others.

SSR extends its heartfelt condolences to Lester’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all who were impacted by his life and legacy.
