With a name that is synonymous with cutting-edge research and medical innovation, the Mayo Clinic has a bold vision for next-generation care. Under the banner “Bold. Forward. Unbound.,” the Mayo Clinic is seeking to revolutionize physical and digital healthcare infrastructure into the 21st century and beyond.

Our team was engaged to implement this vision in the vertical expansion of the Mayo Clinic in Florida, delivering technology innovation consulting and low voltage engineering services.

Aiming to expand facilities by approximately 60%, this vertical expansion will add five stories to the existing eight-story hospital, along with the expansion of podium levels. Once completed by the end of 2026, the Mayo Clinic in Florida will feature 1.4 million SF with 428 patient beds including 121 new inpatient beds, 56 ICU beds, and additional shelled space for future growth.

Revolutionary Digital Solutions for Revolutionary Patient Care

In support of Mayo Clinic’s goals to intentionally integrate digital technologies for better patient outcomes, our innovation team is leading technology planning and integration efforts with a focus on advancing patient engagement.

Through our partnership with Mayo Clinic’s Unbound team, we systematically evaluated patient engagement platform options. This process culminated in the selection of a unified technology ecosystem that integrates seamlessly with Mayo Clinic’s care delivery model.

Central to this transformation is the integration of 105-inch ultrawide displays in each patient room—a solution that exemplifies Mayo Clinic’s vision for inspired spaces. These displays merge traditional patient entertainment systems with interactive care information displays, creating an environment that supports both patient comfort and clinical efficiency.

Our technology assessment extended beyond the engagement software to evaluate Mayo Clinic’s telehealth capabilities. Through a structured review process involving comparison against multiple industry leaders, our team proposed a comprehensive platform solution that consolidates telehealth services, hardware integration, and patient engagement tools. This strategic consolidation enhances Mayo Clinic’s ability to deliver coordinated care while streamlining their technology infrastructure.

The selection process, led by our innovation team, encompassed:

  • Development of a multi-phase vendor selection framework including hands-on product evaluations and strategic alignment assessments
  • Organization of an extensive discovery program featuring demonstrations from industry-leading vendors and resulting in customized solutions tailored to Mayo’s specific requirements
  • Leadership of multiple site visits to premier healthcare facilities across the country, gathering best practices and insights for technology implementation with Mayo staff
  • Creation of detailed integration requirements that ensure seamless operation across Mayo’s expanding facility
  • Implementation of a data-driven decision matrix incorporating clinical workflow impacts, patient experience metrics, and long-term scalability considerations

This comprehensive approach to technology integration supports Mayo Clinic’s mission to expand access to care while creating spaces that enable staff to focus on what matters most—delivering hope and healing to patients from around the world.

Engineering Excellence in Low Voltage Infrastructure

Beyond our innovation consulting role, we delivered comprehensive low voltage engineering services essential to Mayo Clinic in Florida’s digital transformation. Our engineering team designed and documented all critical communication and safety systems throughout the vertical expansion including structured cabling, distributed antenna systems (DAS), overhead paging, nurse call, real-time location systems (RTLS), security and access control, video surveillance, and audiovisual systems.

This intricate design work encompassed the development of detailed infrastructure pathways, telecommunications rooms, equipment specifications, and riser diagrams across multiple floors. Our team produced complete construction documents and specifications that address every aspect of the low voltage scope, aligning these integrated systems with Mayo’s commitment to exceptional patient care and operational excellence.

A Hospital Unbound

The mission behind this project is perhaps best expressed in the words of the Mayo Clinic’s President and CEO Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., “People come to Mayo Clinic from all over the world for the care only we can provide, and we are committed to expanding and creating inspired spaces that deliver on our promise of hope and healing.”

This “Unbound” vision will soon be realized in part with the Mayo Clinic in Florida’s expanded hospital, broadening access to innovative solutions with life-saving potential.
