Duke University Medical Center Bed Tower Addition

Durham, North Carolina

The new Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) Bed Tower Addition is an important project that will play an integral role in the campus-wide transformation to patient care. The 490,000 SF, 13-story bed tower will include 350 flexible patient rooms to accommodate varying degrees of acuity. In addition to patient rooms, the new facility will house a small pharmacy and building support services on the lower two floors, and a pediatric cath lab on the first floor. SSR has been engaged to provide equipment planning services for the project, including asset management.

Utilizing Equipment Solution Planning (ESP), a proprietary web-based software planning tool, our team of experienced equipment planning consultants conducted an inventory audit of existing medical equipment, assessing each piece’s condition to determine if it would be reused or replaced. ESP allowed us to provide real-time equipment data and information to DUMC and the project team.

Midway through design development, the project programming was modified from an all-adult tower to a combination of pediatric and adult care. ESP allowed us to quickly pivot and address changes to the needed equipment without any interruption to the project timeline or budget.
