UCLA Health Training Center

El Sugundo, California

After decades of bouncing from practice space to space, the Los Angeles Lakers finally have a permanent home. The UCLA Health Training Center opened in August of 2017 and was designed to encourage integration across all aspects of team operations, while keeping basketball at the center of the design and focus.  The facility serves as the Lakers headquarters and practice facility.

The 120,000 SF LEED Platinum® facility performs 37.6% better than ASHRAE 90.1-2010 baseline building.  SSR completed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design and incorporated high efficiency condensing boiler, variable speed DX compressors, air-side economizers , dedicated outdoor air unit with enthalpy wheels, outdoor airflow measuring stations, optimized HVAC controls, demand-based ventilation control strategy, low flow plumbing fixtures, high efficiency condensing water heaters, LED interior and exterior lighting to reduce lighting energy by 55%.

The practice center consists of two full size basketball courts with an operable partition that when closed creates a 1,000 seat basketball arena/event space for the NBA “G-League” team, the South Bay Lakers to play their home games.  There are separate home and guest team locker rooms for players and coaches during these G-League games.  The LA Lakers players have a private locker room, players kitchen, lounge, interior court yard, and full weight training room with therapy and hydro therapy spaces.  Coaches have separate locker rooms and access to the latest technology for reviewing game films in their offices. The facility also includes a theater for coaching presentations and team film review.  The building and site have been wired and powered for TV truck connections and incorporated a TV broadcast room for interviews and team announcements with broadcast production support space.  The second floor contains offices for ownership, front end staff, marketing, sales, and support staff.
